Welcome to Instrumental Music at TCK!
My name is Ms. Hazelwood and I have been fortunate enough to teach instrumental music at Tully C Knoles for 5 years now. In Lincoln Unified, we offer a wide variety of musical opportunities for all students, beginning in 4th grade!
All students age Kindergarten through 6th Grade participate in classroom music twice a week. During these classes, students learn to sing and play instruments, as well as learn the fundamentals of music.
When students start 4th Grade, they have the opportunity to enroll in Beginning Strings or Beginning Choir (taught by Mr. Walth). Both classes meet twice a week at different times and are built into the school day; this means that sometimes students may miss something in class while they are in music, and they must be very good at making up all missed work.
In 5th Grade, students can participate in Choir, Strings, or Beginning Band. It's awfully difficult to keep up with missed classwork, so we usually encourage most students to only participate in one of these. Regardless of which group they are in, all students have a meaningful experience with fun performance opportunities, and a great chance to dive deeper into the music they love!
In 6th Grade at TCK, students get to choose an elective as part of their day - and they have that class EVERY DAY! Typically at the end of the school day, the elective class can be taught by different teachers, and they may even be mixed in classes with 7th and 8th graders! At this time, the only music electives offered are Band and Choir, although I believe we will add Orchestra to that before too long. When students in 6th grade play string instruments, they still have class but it's two to three times a week for 30 minutes, and they may still be missing a class. Not to worry; all our teachers work very closely to collaborate and make sure our students get a well-rounded education!
In 7th and 8th grade, the options are very similar to 6th grade. This year, however, we have an Advanced Band as a separate class. This class is only open to 7th and 8th grade returning students, and has highly rigorous expectations.
We are looking forward to a fantastic year with many wonderful opportunities! Please don't hesitate to contact me for more information!
